BP Pays $5M Fine Over False Production Reports

Law360, New York (July 18, 2012, 6:20 PM EDT) -- BP America Inc. has paid a $5.2 million civil penalty for submitting false or misleading reports that let it pay lower royalty rates on energy production on Southern Ute Indian Tribal lands in Colorado, the U.S. Department of the Interior announced Wednesday.

Southern Ute Tribal auditors discovered that BP used incorrect product codes and sales-type codes, resulting in the company paying lower royalty rates on energy production, the DOI said. BP also reported well production to the wrong leases, the government said.
