Shipping Co. Crowley Fined $17M Over Price-Fixing Scheme

Law360, New York (August 1, 2012, 6:46 PM EDT) -- Marine transportation company Crowley Liner Services Inc. was hit with a $17 million fine in pleading guilty to its role in a price-fixing conspiracy in the freight transportation industry for its transport between the continental U.S. and Puerto Rico, the U.S. Department of Justice said Wednesday.

Prosecutors accused the Jacksonville, Fla.-based Crowley of conducting a scheme from January 2006 to April 2008 with unnamed co-conspirators to undermine competitors by agreeing to fix rates for certain freight services to Puerto Rico, according to a one-count felony charge...
