Public Will Quickly Learn Of Sewage Spills Under NY Law

Law360, New York (August 9, 2012, 4:06 PM EDT) -- Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation Thursday that requires publicly owned sewage treatment plants and sewer systems to notify the public immediately when they discharge untreated or partially treated sewage into New York waterways.

The "Sewage Pollution Right To Know Act,” sponsored in the State Senate by Buffalo Republican Mark Grisanti and in the State Assembly by Long Island Democrat Robert K. Sweeney, passed through the legislature June 21 during its final regular session of the year.
