US Lifts Sanctions On Defected Syrian Prime Minister

Law360, New York (August 14, 2012, 7:26 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Treasury Department on Tuesday lifted economic sanctions against former Syrian Prime Minister Riyad Hijab after his high-profile defection from the government of President Bashar al-Assad last week.

The U.S. said Hijab would no longer be subject to asset freezes or travel bans imposed on other high-ranking members of the Assad regime, which has been widely accused of human rights violations in its efforts to suppress a now-18-month-old popular uprising. Hijab reportedly left Syria for Jordan on Aug. 6.
