Texas Insurance Dept. Email Debacle Reveals Public Tension

Law360, New York (August 15, 2012, 9:48 PM EDT) -- The Texas Insurance Department admitted Wednesday that a staff member, not a technical glitch, was behind the blocking of hundreds of consumer emails criticizing its policies, but stressed that the agency was not ignoring calls for near-term solutions to high property insurance rates.

About 900 emails asking the Insurance Department for immediate relief from "high-cost, low-coverage" homeowners insurance and suggesting a slew of fixes bounced back to their senders in mid-July, though about 330 did make it to Texas Insurance Commissioner Eleanor Kitzman's inbox. Citizens sent...
