USDA, McDonald's Halt Meat Orders Over Abuse Video

Law360, New York (August 23, 2012, 4:36 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture and McDonald’s Corp. said Wednesday they have stopped purchasing meat from a slaughterhouse in California where animal rights activists shot video of workers who appeared to be abusing animals.

Prompted by the video to look into conditions at the slaughter facility operated by Central Valley Meat Co., the USDA's Food Safety and Inspection Service found humane treatment violations and on Aug. 19 suspended inspections at the plant, effectively halting slaughter operations, the agency said Wednesday in a letter to regional directors....
