NRC Fuel Rule Review Leaves New Reactor Licenses In Limbo

Law360, New York (September 6, 2012, 8:46 PM EDT) -- The Nuclear Regulatory Commission said Thursday it would review a rule allowing nuclear power plant operators to store spent fuel on-site, launching a two-year environmental study experts say the commission will need to complete before licensing any new reactors.

The NRC said it would revise its so-called waste confidence rule and prepare an environmental impact statement on it, following a court decision finding the commission should have considered the environmental effects of storing nuclear waste at power plants.
