Judge Nixes $7.8M Orthofix Medicare Fraud Plea

Law360, New York (September 6, 2012, 5:54 PM EDT) -- A Massachusetts federal judge on Thursday rejected the guilty plea and $7.8 million criminal fine of Orthofix International NV in the Medicare fraud case accusing the company of obstructing audits and paying kickbacks to doctors, saying the deal unduly tied his hands regarding sentencing. 

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Justice confirmed U.S. District Judge William G. Young rejected the guilty plea Thursday, saying he was concerned the deal restricted his power to issue an adequate sentence in the case.
