EU Court Says Wine Labels Can't Boast Health Benefits

Law360, New York (September 7, 2012, 3:51 PM EDT) -- The European Union's high court ruled on Thursday that wine producers cannot label wine bottles with claims such as "easily digestible," saying the phrase fell within European laws prohibiting companies from marketing alcohol as having health benefits.

The European Court of Justice ruled that European laws governing the use of health claims in marketing alcoholic products barred Deutsches Weintor eG —a German winegrowers' cooperative — from labeling their wine with the German term for "wholesome" or "easily digestible."
