Southern Union Charged With Illegal Mercury Storage

Law360 (October 16, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A federal grand jury in Rhode Island has charged Southern Union Co., the Texas-based former owner of the New England Gas Co., with illegally storing mercury at a Pawtucket, R.I., site and failing to report mercury spillage, the U.S. attorney’s office said Tuesday.

The three-count indictment, handed down Tuesday in the U.S. District Court for the District of Rhode Island, carries a maximum fine of $66.8 million, in addition to a $500,000 maximum fine for failing to report a hazardous waste spill, according to U.S. Attorney...
