Citing Budget, Philly Asks Judge To Toss Firefighters' Award

Law360, Philadelphia (October 15, 2012, 11:21 PM EDT) -- An attorney for the city of Philadelphia on Monday asked a state court judge to overturn an arbitration award that granted pay raises to the city’s unionized firefighters, claiming that the award violated state law.

In oral arguments, Shannon Farmer told Court of Common Pleas Judge Idee C. Fox that the panel that authorized the raises — which would put the city $211 million over budget over five years, according to a city estimate — misunderstood its mandated rule.
