NY Settles Text Message Scam Claims With Mobile Co.

Law360, Los Angeles (September 17, 2012, 8:16 PM EDT) -- San Jose, Calif.-based Game Theory LLC has agreed to reform its business practices and pay $500,000 to settle allegations that it sent fraudulent text messages tricking New York consumers into signing up for unnecessary services, the New York attorney general announced Saturday.

The settlement shined a light on the seamy world of fraudulent text message scamming, in which mobile messaging companies use misleading tactics to extract monthly charges from unsuspecting cellphone subscribers.
