NY Fines UnitedHealth Cos. For Not Explaining Coverage

Law360, New York (September 20, 2012, 4:09 PM EDT) -- New York's insurance regulator said Thursday it has slapped two UnitedHealth Group Inc. companies with a $665,000 fine for not providing statements to health plan members to explain coverage and lay out the process for challenging claims denials.

Benjamin Lawsky, the state's superintendent of financial services, said Oxford Health Plans NY Inc. and Oxford Health Insurance Inc. flouted New York law about 300,000 times when they failed to provide explanation of benefits statements to customers.
