Calif. Gov. Approves Bill To Further Limit Meritless Suits

Law360, San Diego (September 21, 2012, 9:20 PM EDT) -- The California governor on Friday signed legislation that seeks to give judges additional tools to control vexatious litigants who repeatedly bring meritless suits.

Gov. Jerry Brown approved A.B. 2274, which will extend the vexatious litigant statute from pro se parties to plaintiffs who initially had legal representation but are now representing themselves. The measure, authored by Assemblyman Ricardo Lara, D-Bell Gardens, intends to clear up an existing loophole that allows for vexatious litigants to avoid closer judicial scrutiny of their case if they drop their attorney...
