Senate Slams DHS' Local Intelligence Gathering As Useless

Law360, New York (October 3, 2012, 7:12 PM EDT) -- A U.S Senate report published Wednesday blasted the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's spending on state and local intelligence “fusion centers,” saying their information gathering violated citizens' privacy without helping federal counterterrorism efforts and leaned too heavily on underqualified contractors.

The report, the result of a two-year investigation by the Senate Permanent Subcommittee on Investigations, characterized some of the information coming from the fusion centers as "complete and utter crap." It found the centers had little oversight, often devoted resources entirely toward local law enforcement goals...
