House Energy Committee Takes Aim At BP

Law360, New York (October 24, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Energy and Commerce will investigate a $303 million civil settlement between British Petroleum and U.S. authorities to ascertain if the penalty is adequate to deter “improper behavior,” the committee's chairman said Wednesday.

The announcement, which came from House Energy Committee Chairman Rep. John Dingell (D-MI), follows a spate of published reports saying that BP had agreed to shell out $303 million to quell charges that it manipulated the U.S. propane market three years ago.
