EPA Can Improve CWA Guideline Revision Process, GAO Says

Law360, New York (October 11, 2012, 5:28 PM EDT) -- The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency must better assess pollution hazards and advances in treatment technology in evaluating which industry categories may require updated water pollution guidelines, according to a government report released Wednesday.

The U.S. Government Accountability Office found that the EPA has generally improved its review process for effluent guidelines under the Clean Water Act, but during its initial review phase the EPA has failed to appropriately consider existing water pollution hazard data or the availability of advanced treatment technologies for most industrial categories....
