Deepwater Judge Won't Bump Settlement Opt-Out Deadline

Law360, New York (October 11, 2012, 8:25 PM EDT) -- The judge handling multidistrict litigation over the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill on Wednesday rejected a request by victims’ lawyers to push back the deadline to opt out of the $7.8 billion settlement BP PLC struck with the plaintiffs’ steering committee.

U.S. District Judge Carl Barbier ruled in a short order that a Nov. 1 opt-out deadline would stand, over objections that it didn’t give claimants enough time to resolve claims against BP and other defendants through BP-funded claims centers.
