FCC Bans Exclusive Cable TV Deals

Law360, New York (October 31, 2007, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a unanimous ruling, the Federal Communications Commission has approved a new rule banning apartment building owners from striking exclusive deals with cable TV service providers, kicking open the door to increased competition in the industry.

The FCC said the change is intended to foster competition and increase choice for the nearly 30% of Americans who live in multi-unit dwellings. The rule also prohibits current exclusive agreements from being enforced or executed, effectively voiding thousands of contracts.
