Stanford, Prenatal Blood Test Co. Say Rival Infringes Patent

Law360, Washington (October 29, 2012, 4:11 PM EDT) -- Stanford University's board of trustees and Verinata Health Inc. sued prenatal blood test maker Ariosa Diagnostics in California federal court Wednesday, alleging the company's Harmony prenatal test for Down syndrome and other fetal chromosomal disorders infringes a Stanford patent.

Verinata is the exclusive licensee of the patent-in-suit, U.S. Patent Number 8,296,076. In early 2012, it began commercially marketing its Verifi prenatal test, which analyzes extracellular DNA in a pregnant woman's blood to gauge a fetus' risk of having an abnormal number of chromosomes.
