Insurers Avoid Defending Enviro Firm In Chevron’s RICO Suit

Law360, New York (November 1, 2012, 7:50 PM EDT) -- A Colorado federal judge on Thursday allowed three insurers to avoid defending Stratus Consulting Inc. in a racketeering suit from Chevron Corp.accusing the firm and others of peddling sham allegations over an oil spill in Ecuador that led to a $19.2 billion judgment against the company.

U.S. District Judge Richard P. Matsch said that policies from Navigators Specialty Insurance Co., Hartford Casualty Insurance Co. and Twin City Fire Insurance Co. all contain exclusions which eliminate any obligation to cover the environmental consulting firm in Chevron’s underlying action, granting...
