Orthofix Division To Pay $30M To End FCA Kickbacks Suit

Law360, New York (November 2, 2012, 3:23 PM EDT) -- Orthofix International NV agreed Friday to pay the federal government $30 million to end a whistleblower's False Claims Act suit alleging a subsidiary of the surgical supplies manufacturer paid illegal kickbacks to physicians to induce use of the company's products.

The settlement ends a suit accusing Blackstone Medical Inc. of offering spinal surgeons illegal incentives to induce use of its spinal implant and other spinal surgery products in their Medicare, Medicaid and Tricare patients, causing hospitals to submit false claims payments to the government for the...
