Diabetes Test Suppliers Overbilled Medicare, Watchdog Says

Law360, New York (November 8, 2012, 7:42 PM EST) -- Suppliers of diabetes testing strips used improper sales and billing practices around the time a new Medicare program was introduced, potentially violating the False Claims Act and anti-kickback laws, a watchdog said Wednesday.

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ inspector general said in a report that 20 percent of Medicare beneficiaries reported receiving cheaper, mail-order testing strips, even though their suppliers were billing Medicare for more expensive, nonmail-order testing strips.
