Jury Awards Damages To Inventor, Technology 'Stolen' During Demo

Law360, New York (August 30, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- A district-court jury has determined that Cybex International Inc., a publicly traded supplier of cardiovascular exercise equipment, copied the design of an inventor after inviting him to demonstrate his new technology for the company.

The jury held that Massachusetts-based Cybex’s treadmill deck system infringes a patent held by inventor Gary J. Colassi. Colassi was awarded damages of $2.5 million, representing a portion of Cybex’s sales of the product.

The verdict was delivered in U.S. District Court for Massachusetts, where Colassi filed his complaint in September 2002....
