Calif. City Can't Escape Defense Costs For Ex-Manager

Law360, Los Angeles (November 28, 2012, 3:24 PM EST) -- A California judge on Wednesday tentatively denied the city of Bell's bid to escape footing the bill for the criminal defense of former City Manager Robert Rizzo, who is accused of illegally funneling millions of taxpayer dollars to pay himself and others lucrative salaries.

Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Ralph Dau said he could not conclude from the face of Rizzo's employment agreement that an indemnification clause contained within it did not survive the termination of his employment in August 2010. Prosecutors filed a felony complaint...
