Best Buy Hit With $5M Punitives For Stealing Trade Secrets

Law360, New York (December 6, 2012, 4:30 PM EST) -- A California federal judge on Monday tacked on $5 million in punitive damages to a $22 million jury award against Best Buy Co. Inc. for allegedly willfully stealing TechForward Inc.'s trade secrets and breaching a confidentiality agreement concerning an electronics buy-back program.

U.S. District Judge Otis D. Wright II awarded TechForward $5 million in exemplary damages, much less than the $22 million the electronics recycler had requested. The judge did not give his reasons for the award.
