NRC Eyes Tougher Radioactive Waste Disposal Site Reviews

Law360, New York (December 11, 2012, 6:19 PM EST) -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission proposed Friday to amend its regulations for disposing of low-level radioactive waste to require more thorough reviews of new disposal facilities.

In a Federal Register notice, the commission said it was seeking to require new and updated site-specific analyses that it would use as criteria for states and communities to accept waste.

The NRC floated a preliminary rule in May 2011 laying out new standards for assessing new facilities for disposing of low-level radioactive waste. Further investigation by the commission revealed...
