Ex-NYC Pol Gets 2 Years For Using Nonprofit Cash In Campaign

Law360, New York (December 11, 2012, 7:27 PM EST) -- Former New York state Sen. Hiram Monserrate was sentenced Tuesday to two years in prison for diverting taxpayer money meant for a nonprofit to his own election campaign.

Monserrate, a 45-year-old native of Queens, N.Y., must also pay back $79,434.49 to New York City, U.S. District Judge Colleen McMahon said at a hearing in Manhattan.

While he was a city councilor representing Queens, Monserrate redirected about $100,000 meant for a group called Latino Initiative for Better Resources and Empowerment to fund a 2006 bid for Democratic...
