Canadian Mining Co. Hit With $152M Kyrgyz Pollution Claim

Law360, New York (December 14, 2012, 2:57 PM EST) -- Canadian mining company Centerra Gold Inc. is facing a $152 million claim from the Kyrgyzstan government alleging environmental damages from waste dumps used in the company's mining operations in the Central Asian country, Centerra said Friday.

The Kyrgyz State Inspectorate Office for Environment and Technical Safety is alleging that Centerra's placement of its tailings facility for waste rock is in violation of the country's environmental laws.
