Google Gives Up Little In FTC Essential-Patent Deal

Law360, New York (January 3, 2013, 8:50 PM EST) -- The head of the U.S. Federal Trade Commission on Thursday hailed its agreement with Google Inc. over standard-essential patents as a broad commitment by the search engine to stop seeking injunctions the agency claims are anti-competitive, but attorneys say the settlement’s fine print gives Google plenty of wiggle room to continue pursuing bans on competitors' products.

"In reality, I don't see this consent decree as Google giving up very much," said James Kulbaski of Oblon Spivak McClelland Maier & Neustadt LLP.
