Caviar Distributor Gets Time-Served For $10M Import Scam

Law360, New York (January 7, 2013, 3:42 PM EST) -- A former New York City luxury food importer was sentenced to time-served Monday after pleading guilty to avoiding import tariffs on $10 million in Russian and Iranian caviar in the mid-1980s, according to federal prosecutors.

U.S. District Judge Kevin Thomas Duffy also ordered Isidoro “Mario” Garbarino, an Italian national, to be immediately deported, on top of the $3 million in restitution he had already agreed to pay when he admitted the duty-dodging scheme in November.
