NRC Wants Bigger Guns At Nuke Storage Sites

Law360, New York (January 9, 2013, 7:47 PM EST) -- The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission is slated to propose a rule Thursday allowing nuclear operators to equip guards at spent fuel storage sites with machine guns and other weapons to protect the facilities against "radiological sabotage."

In a Federal Register notice, the NRC said it was seeking to supplement a related measure granting licensees enhanced weapons authority to include among the covered facilities waste storage sites located near nuclear reactors.
