FTC Sues To Shut Alleged $220M Telemarketing Scam

Law360, New York (January 11, 2013, 3:16 PM EST) -- The Federal Trade Commission, New York and Florida filed suit Wednesday against a group of telemarketing companies that purportedly defrauded consumers out of more than $220 million with a bogus small business development scam.

The agency says the scheme, which operated out of the 60th floor of the Empire State Building, has deceived thousands of Americans — including many elderly and disabled consumers — into purchasing small business development services through false promises of unlimited guidance from tax, business planning and business credit development experts....
