HHS Releases Long-Awaited Final Rule Expanding HIPAA

Law360, New York (January 17, 2013, 6:53 PM EST) -- Federal health officials on Thursday released a long-awaited omnibus rule that significantly expands the reach of health privacy laws by making "business associates" of health care providers and insurers, such as billing contractors, subject to those laws for the first time.

The new rule implements a number of changes to the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act, or HIPAA, passed as part of the stimulus bill in 2009.
