Christie Sinks NJ Minimum Wage Bill, Calls For Alternate Plan

Law360, New York (January 28, 2013, 4:42 PM EST) -- New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie on Monday vetoed legislation that would have increased the state's minimum wage to $8.50 an hour and hitched future increases to the Consumer Price Index, instead proposing a phased-in, $1 hike that he said would protect the state's economic recovery.

Conditionally vetoing a proposal that received final approval from the Democratic-controlled Legislature in December, Christie said lawmakers failed to hand him sensible, balanced legislation that would help minimum wager earners without hurting small- and medium-sized businesses.
