Despite Spotlight, Next DOJ Chief May Face Diminished Role

Law360, New York (January 29, 2013, 8:48 PM EST) -- If U.S. Department of Justice Criminal Division head Lanny Breuer steps down as rumored, his successor will assume a role with heavy public exposure but little leeway to change the government’s enforcement priorities, attorneys say.

Breuer soon will leave his post after a four-year tenure, The Washington Post reported Jan. 23, citing unnamed sources. The news quickly was overshadowed by the White House's nomination of Mary Jo White to lead the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.
