Eight States Sue R.J. Reynolds Over Cigarette Ads

Law360 (December 4, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Big Tobacco is in big trouble again.

Cigarette giant R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. has been hit with multimillion-dollar law suits by eight attorneys general claiming the company violated an industrywide consent decree banning brand merchandise and cartoons for product promotion.

The states, which include Maryland, New York and California, filed their suits Tuesday, calling for an immediate injunction against the company. The suits also seek a total of $100 million in sanctions for R.J. Reynolds' breach of the 1998 prohibition of the use of aggressive marketing...
