RJ Reynolds Must Pay Widow $41M In Engle Lung Cancer Suit

Law360, New York (February 19, 2013, 2:10 PM EST) -- A Florida jury handed down a $40.5 million verdict against R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. on Thursday in an Engle progeny case, awarding the money to a widow who blames the cigarette maker for causing her husband's fatal lung cancer.

Finding that James Edward Schoeff was deceived by R.J. Reynolds regarding the health effects and additive risks of the company's cigarettes, the jury awarded $10.5 million in compensatory damages and $30 million in punitive damages to Joan Schoeff Spolzino 12 years after her husband died.
