USPTO Rejects Microsoft Computer File Patents

Law360, New York (October 6, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- In a setback for Microsoft, Inc., the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office has rejected two patents relating to the software maker’s “FAT” system for recognizing computer files.

In a decision released this week, the USPTO again rejected the main patent (the ‘517 patent) and issued a preliminary rejection for a related patent (the ‘352 patent).

The decision follows a review prompted by the New York-based Public Patent Foundation’s formal request, filed last year, to revoke Microsoft’s patent.
