Chesapeake Defrauded Oil, Gas Leaseholders, $5M Suit Says

Law360, Los Angeles (March 7, 2013, 8:09 PM EST) -- Chesapeake Energy Corp. and others fraudulently skimmed at least $5 million off royalty payments to thousands of unsuspecting oil and gas leaseholders dating back to as early as the mid-1990s, according to a putative class action filed Thursday in Arkansas federal court.

Over the course of its well-drilling operations in Arkansas, the energy company has — along with co-defendants BP America Production Co. and BHP Billiton Petroleum — illegally extracted millions of dollars from mineral rights holders by underpaying royalties and falsifying check stubs, the suit says....
