Securities Class Action Settlements Hit 14-Year Low In 2012
By David McAfee (March 19, 2013, 11:57 PM EDT) -- The 53 court-approved securities class action settlements reported in 2012 represent a 14-year low, which may be in part due to the relatively low number of securities class actions filed in 2009 and 2010, according to a report released Wednesday.
Cornerstone Research Inc.'s report, titled "Securities Class Action Settlements — 2012 Review and Analysis," also found that despite the decrease in the number of settled cases, total settlement amounts rose by more than 100 percent in 2012, with the number of settlements in excess of $100 million accounting for nearly 75 percent of all 2012 settlement dollars.
