Illegal Dumping Nets Shipping Company $4.9M Fine

Law360, New York (December 17, 2007, 12:00 AM EST) -- Greek shipping company Ionia Management SA was fined $4.9 million on Friday for illegally dumping waste oil into international waters and then lying about it to the U.S. government.

In addition to the fine, Judge Janet Bond Arterton of the U.S. District Court for the District of Connecticut appointed a special master to oversee Ionia's record keeping. Judge Arterton also ruled that no ships owned by Ionia will be allowed to enter U.S. ports unless they install special monitoring equipment.
