University Sees Cash Cow In Text Messaging Patent

Law360 (October 13, 2005, 12:00 AM EDT) -- The University of Texas is pushing ahead with patent litigation over 20-year-old predictive text-messaging technology, targeting a “Who’s Who” roster of the world’s leading high-tech companies.

The university racked up another licensing deal on Thursday, when Dutch electronics giant Kninklijke Philips Electronics N.V. threw in the towel and agreed to settle a lawsuit.

Neither party would provide any details of the financial terms of the deal, but another settlement struck with BlackBerry maker Research in Motion in August suggests the patent could yield a rich cash...
