US, Record Cos. Argue For Big Piracy Fine At 1st Circ.

Law360, New York (March 27, 2013, 6:33 PM EDT) -- The recording industry and the federal government on Wednesday urged the First Circuit to uphold as constitutional a $675,000 damages award against a man who illegally shared 30 copyrighted songs while he was a Boston University student.

In separate briefs, the U.S. Department of Justice and a group of four major labels pushed the appeals court to reject an argument the U.S. Supreme Court twice has recently refused to consider: that massive statutory penalties for online piracy under the Copyright Act are unconstitutionally severe.
