Medicare Asleep On $70M Equipment Overpayments, OIG Says

Law360, New York (March 28, 2013, 1:59 PM EDT) -- Medicare has recovered just a sliver of as much as $70 million in overpayments to suppliers of durable medical equipment despite a mandate that such companies obtain bonds to guarantee taxpayers can recoup excessive reimbursement, according to a report issued Wednesday.

As of July, less than $265,000 had been clawed back from suppliers in the DME industry, which has long been a source of rampant fraud, the Office of Inspector General at the U.S. Health and Human Services Department said.
