EU Unveils Plans To Modernize Trademark System

Law360, New York (March 29, 2013, 3:23 PM EDT) -- The European Commission on Wednesday announced plans to modernize the EU trademark system, a move supporters said will improve intellectual property owners' ability to fight the flow of counterfeit goods.

The commission said the changes will make trademark registration throughout the EU cheaper and easier for businesses. Proposals being considered would clarify the scope of trademark holders' rights, reduce registration fees and improve cooperation between national trademark offices and the EU's trademark agency, the Office for Harmonization in the Internal Market.
