Jury Orders UnitedHealth To Pay $24M Over Hep C Outbreak

Law360, New York (April 5, 2013, 4:22 PM EDT) -- A Nevada state jury Thursday found two United HealthCare Services Inc. units had negligently failed to monitor a doctor responsible for a hepatitis C outbreak, awarding $24 million to two patients who were infected with the disease.

After two days of deliberation, the jury found health maintenance organization Health Plan of Nevada and its parent company Sierra Health Services Inc., both UnitedHealth subsidiaries, liable for the hepatitis C infections of plaintiffs Bonnie Brunson and Helen Meyer, part of a hepatitis outbreak traced back to Las Vegas-area...
