OSHA Fines Food Co. Over 'Popcorn Lung' Chemical Exposure

Law360, New York (April 9, 2013, 3:04 PM EDT) -- The Occupational Safety and Health Administration on Monday slapped New Jersey food company Natural Flavors Inc. with a dozen fines for safety and health violations and berated the company for exposing its workers to diacetyl, the harmful chemical behind so-called "popcorn lung."

Natural Flavors will pay just over $60,000 in penalties for 12 worker safety violations in its Newark, N.J., facility, including the exposure of employees to the chemical. Diacetyl has been linked to permanent respiratory and pulmonary injuries and diseases like bronchiolitis obliterans.
