NYC Bill Would Raise Legal Age For Buying Tobacco To 21

Law360, New York (April 22, 2013, 4:34 PM EDT) -- Fresh off the announcement that New York City would push for a bill to keep tobacco out of sight at retailers, the city council said Monday it planned to raise the legal age for purchasing such products from 18 to 21.

Passage of the legislation — said to have Mayor Michael Bloomberg's support — by the overwhelmingly Democratic city legislature would make New York the nation's first major city with a minimum smoking age above 19 years, according to the city council.
