EU Seal Import Ban Is Legal, Court Rules

Law360, New York (April 25, 2013, 2:32 PM EDT) -- A European Union court on Thursday upheld the bloc's prohibition on the import and sale of seal products, dismissing a lawsuit from Canadian Inuits who claimed the EU couldn't establish animal welfare laws.

Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami, an association of Canadian Inuit people who hunt seals, had argued that the EU's founding documents didn't give it the right to create laws like the disputed 2009 ban on the commercial trade of seal products.
